Diamond Jewelry Care & Maintenance

· Diamond is the hardest substance known to man. Although your diamond is incredibly durable, it can still be chipped by a strong blow to an edge. If diamonds did not have a weakness, it could not be fashioned at all. That weakness is its perfect "cleavage," or the tendency to split along its perfect crystal planes. This makes diamond susceptible to cracking or chipping with a sharp blow. Reasonable care is essential to enjoy your investment for many years.

· Remove your jewelry and put it in a safe place while doing household chores (washing dishes, laundry, etc.), yard work, going to the gym or any activity where you may be at a higher risk of scratching the setting, damaging the prongs that keep your stone secure, or knocking your diamond into something that could chip, scratch or break it.

· Remove all jewelry before bathing, swimming, soaking in a hot tub or using any chemicals. Soap can leave a dulling film; and while diamonds won’t be harmed by them, chemicals such as chlorine or cleaning solutions can damage your mountings and other jewelry.

· Do have your ring checked and cleaned at least every six months by your trusted jeweler. Your Stardust warranty includes free annual maintenance so it is recommended that you send your jewelry into Stardust Diamonds once a year.

· Do not leave your ring on the rim of a sink when you remove it to wash your hands or do dishes. An open drain is an invitation to trouble.

· Store your diamond jewelry separately because diamonds can scratch other jewelry or each other. Protect your jewelry from scratching by using pouches or a compartmentalized jewelry box. Don't sleep in your jewelry; it can be dangerous to you and the jewelry.

· A simple plan to keep your diamond jewelry always looking beautiful is to soak the diamond in rubbing alcohol overnight, once or twice weekly. In the morning, remove the diamond from the cleaner and brush it with a soft, clean toothbrush (one that has not previously been used in any way, and that you reserve exclusively for cleaning your diamond) over a bowl (never over the sink) to remove any leftover dirt. Take extra care to brush the back of the diamond as this will be the area that has collected the most oil and dirt. Rinse the ring by dipping in a small bowl of water and dry with a lint free cloth.
